Lent and Easter Wisdom From St. Francis and St. clare of Assisi, compiled by John Kruse
8 compiled by John Kruse Lent and Easter Wisdom From St. Francis and St. clare of Assisi
L-p30-2010
Although they lived nearly 800 years ago, Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi serve as excellent guides for the modern Lenten journey. Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi abandoned their comfortable lifestyles and embraced lives of poverty, humility, and penance to better follow the call to Christian discipleship. Both saints underwent powerful conversion experiences in their lives. In the course of their conversions, they ignited a movement that reformed the medieval Church and that continues to influence and inspire millions of Christians to this day. In this book of prayers, letters, poetry, rules of life, and testaments, Francis and Clare express their vision of the Gospel life. Included are numerous themes extremely appropriate for the Lenten and Easter seasons: penance, conversion, self-sacrifice, service, embracing the cross, the humility and charity of Christ, joy, new life, and mission. Through these daily meditations, Scriptural readings, and spiritual exercises, we follow two of the most influential figures in Church history. Each selected writing is followed by a brief scripture passage, a fitting prayer, and a suggested action-making this book an ideal companion for daily use. The words and example of these two great saints will inspire readers faithfully to follow Christ to the cross so that, together with them, they might experience the joy and new life of Easter. 13 Father Charles E. Miller, C.M. AS RAIN THAT FALLS Homiletic Reflections for the Weekdays of Advent and Lent

The Word of God, proclaimed and pondered, is like rain from heaven nourishing the seedbed of our faith. EMBRACE YOUR RENEWAL A Thought a Day for Lent, Father Harold A. Buetow
15 Father Harold A. Buetow EMBRACE YOUR RENEWAL A Thought a Day for Lent

The readings for the weekday masses for the first three weeks of Lent take their Gospel reading from Saints Matthew, Mark, and Luke, with emphasis on the cures and works of Jesus. From the fourth week on, Gospel passages are from St. John, centering on the person of the Lord and fitting for those about to commit themselves to him. For the Christian, Lent means an opportunity to banish ignorance, to deaden lust, to enrich the poor, to defend children, to make decent medical care as globally ubiquitous as Coca-Cola, and to end many world catastrophes. Mortification guides our imagination and memory by keeping away useless or harmful thoughts, and it may also help control the tongue from useless and frivolous conversations or gossip. All of these topics and many, many more are presented in an informative and entertaining fashion in these thoughtful reflections for the weekdays of Lent. They are ideal for homilists as well as for the average person in the pew. 207 pages

LIFE OUT OF DEATH A Thought a Day for the Easter Season, Harold A. Buetow
18 Harold A. Buetow LIFE OUT OF DEATH A Thought a Day for the Easter Season

Jesus’ resurrection celebrates something special never known before or since. To rise from the dead is so far beyond any human concept, and so much solely God’s work, that people have always had a hard ‘fame trying to comprehend it. In our Nicene Creed we affirm: “I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” In celebrating Jesus’ Resurrection, therefore, we celebrate our own as well. For all who follow Christ Easter, stretching from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, is “party time,” a time of stimulated consciousness, an invitation to penetrate more deeply into this mystery of our faith, and to enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. Easter is a season of “alleluia.” For centuries joyful Christians were known as “Easter people,” and Easter was the principal festival on the Church calendar. The central theme of the Easter cycle – the death and Resurrection of Christ – is not merely an historical commemoration, but a here-and-now manifestation in the Christian assembly of Jesus’ glorification, and a fervent prayer for the full realization of the redemption of humankind brought about by Jesus. Like the Jewish Pasch, Easter celebrates deliverance from slavery: in this case the slavery of sin and death. As such it is the ideal time for the initiation of new members into the community of the saved and for their acceptance into the Body of Christ by Baptism, Confirmation, and first Eucharist. All of these themes and more are presented here by the author in a manner both lighthearted and serious as befits the season. These reflections will benefit enormously those who wish to enter more profoundly into the spirit of Easter. 175 pages
