1 A Study Edition Prepared by Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. SAINT TERESA OF AVILA
ics 0935216707 / 9780935216707
A Study Edition, with Introduction, Commentary, Discussion Questions, and Glossary Prepared by Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. St. Teresa of Avila is an unsurpassed teacher of Christian prayer and spirituality, and in The Way of Perfection she is at her best. Now, with the help of this study edition, everyone can enjoy the benefits of her wisdom. In The Way of Perfection, St. Teresa gives practical counsels and advice on prayer, destined originally for the few nuns who embraced the reformed Carmelite life she established. As a handbook for spiritual formation, it presented them with the basic Christian spirituality undergirding their Constitutions and Rule. Over the centuries, the book's appeal has reached far beyond the walls of Carmelite monasteries, and The Way of Perfection has become a spiritual classic. More and more today, Teresa's instructions speak to all those interested in prayer, providing them with basic guidelines for praying and showing how to avoid potential pitfalls. But as the readership and interest grow, so does the need for some help in working with this sixteenth-century text. The principles and teachings in Teresa's book, first presented within the limited horizons of her own situation, clearly lend themselves to broader applications, and can work well in all walks of life. This study edition-with its introduction, commentary, notes, discussion questions, and glossary-provides what is needed to assist contemporary readers in making these applications and delving more deeply into the text's spiritual riches.544 pages, paper

2 Adapted from the biography of Berthe Petit by Fr. Duffner, M.S.C. Sorrowful and Immaculate heart of Mary

I cherish a vivid remembrance of Mlle Berthe Petit, whom I met in Sweitzerland during the 1914-1918 war. I much appreciated the devotion to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. I am of the same mind as Cardinals Mercier and Bourne that it recalls what the Blessed Virgin has received from God, both the grace of the Immaculate as well as what she herself has done and suffered for us. This invocation of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary seems very opportune in our days of universal suffering and trial, as appears by the Consecration to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary made by several bishops in various Dioceses of France and Belgium. 47 pages.

3 By Fr. Aloysius Deeney, O.C.D. OTHER CARMELITE SAINTS AND THEMES Welcome to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites
ics 0935216758 / 978-0-935216-75-2 Welcome to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelit
This book is a collection of Fr. Aloysius Deeney's conferences presented to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelite (OCDS) members worldwide. His most practical and insightful talks are primarily directed to the members of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites and others who are interested in the tradition of Discalced Carmelites. The author is notable for his enormous understanding and knowledge about the Secular branch of the Order. As such, OCDS members are the true beneficiaries of this book. This is a "must read" book for all of those who are interested in the lay branch of the Order of Discalced Carmelites. "The spirituality of the Discalced Carmelites invites continual study. Any person who wants to be a Discalced Carmelite must be a person with an interest in learning and assimilating the spirit of the teachers of Carmel. This is the beginning of an attitude that is open to learning and practice. A Carmelite who does not have the interest in studying or deepening the root of his/her identity through prayer and study soon loses his/her identity." Fr. Aloysius Deeney OCD, is currently serving as the General delegate for the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites. Fr. Aloysius was born in Philadelphia, PA, and was ordained in 1974. He pursued his study in Carmelite spirituality in Avila, Spain. He served as Provincial of the Oklahoma Province from 1990-1998. He is the main architect in formulating and implementing the Constitutions of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelite Order (OCDS). 116 pages, paper

4 By Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene, O.C.D. Translated by Rev. Sebastian V. Ramge, O.C.D. OTHER CARMELITE SAINTS AND THEMES From the Sacred Heart to the Trinity: The Spiritual Itinerary of St. Teresa Margaret (Redi) of the Sacred Heart, O.C.D.
ics 0935216375 / 9780935216370 The Spiritual Itinerary of St. Teresa Margaret (Re
St. Teresa Margaret Redi was a Carmelite captivated by the love of God. Helping us to appreciate the holy life she led are eyewitness accounts of her spiritual directors collected soon after her death. The author of this small study builds his story on those accounts by the Discalced Carmelite friars who knew her as a young religious. Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene lays out clearly the steps in Saint Teresa Margaret's spiritual biography and how she developed her deep attachment to love for God, by using classic Carmelite doctrine about growth in the spiritual life. Teresa Margaret Redi was an Italian daughter of Saint Teresa of Jesus who lived in the eighteenth century (1747-1770). Like Saints Thérèse of Lisieux and Teresa de los Andes after her, her life in Carmel was brief. Her canonization came early in the last century (1934) and only now are we coming to appreciate better the spiritual legacy she left behind. This summary study by a noted spiritual theologian is a useful companion to the fuller biography of Margaret Rowe, God is Love: Saint Teresa Margaret, Her Life (ICS Publications, 2003). The translator was Editor of Spiritual Life Magazine when he issued this work for Spiritual Life press originally in 1965. 92 pages, paper

5 by Fr. Robert J Billett, C.M.F. Our Lady's Messages from Naju
Compiled a5ccording to subject
God uses signs to lead His people on earth. By His signs and by the gift of faith, we can understand God's Will and also receive His life giving Power flowing through them. The greatest sign that God gave us was the Incarnation of the Second Divine Person, His Sacrifice on the Cross and His Resurrection from Death. This sign was the utmost representation of God's immense Love and saving power for us. In fact, it is the only sign by which the fallen human race can be restored to a full friendship with God and, thus, eternal life, because Christ alone can adequately atone for our sins committed against God. 6 By Marc Foley, O.C.D. SAINT THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX
ics 0935216464 / 978-0-935216-46-2 The Context of Holiness: Psychological and Spiritu
This book explores both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The basic premise of this book is that the spiritual life is not an encapsulated sphere, cloistered from the realities of our human existence. Rather it is our response to God within the physical, psychological, social and emotional dimensions of life. St. Thérèse did not grow in holiness apart from the human condition. Like all of us, she was emotionally scarred by the fragileness of life. She was deeply wounded by the death of her mother at the age of four, bedridden as the result of a neurotic episode when she was ten, struggled with debilitating scruples most of her life, and suffered an agonizing dark night of faith. St. Thérèse was no plaster statue saint. Her life was a real life. As it unfolds before us on the pages of Story of a Soul, we see a pilgrim soul who made her way home to God through many raging storms and dark nights. The specific nature of Thérèse's trials may differ from our own, but psychological and emotional suffering are our common lot. For example, we may not have know the pain of our mother dying when we were four, but most of us have know the pain of the loss of a loved one. The sufferings that we share with Thérèse are universal - physical pain, anxiety, anger, sadness, depression, loneliness, doubts of faith, to name a few. These sufferings make doing the will of God difficult, but they are the context of our choices. They are the context of holiness.176 pages, paper

ics 0935216537 / 9780935216530 Saint Raphael Kalinowski: An Introduction to his L
Little known outside his native Poland, Joseph Kalinowski (Raphael of St. Joseph, O.C.D.) was born in 1835 and became, by turns, an engineer, a military officer, a leader in the 1863 insurrection against Russian domination, an exile in Siberia, a tutor, and eventually a Discalced Carmelite priest. He died in 1907 at the Carmelite monastery he had founded in Wadowice, the city where Karol Wojtyla-the future Pope John Paul II who would later beatify and canonize him-was born only 13 years later. Today Raphael Kalinowski is remembered especially as a man of boundless charity in the Siberian prison camps, a restorer of Carmel in Poland, a skilled confessor and spiritual director, and a tireless promoter of Marian devotion and of unity between the Eastern and Western Churches. In 1991, he became the first Discalced Carmelite friar canonized since St. John of the Cross. This booklet offers a concise introduction to one of the pope's favorite saints, and includes a brief biography of Saint Raphael Kalinowski, a synthesis of his spiritual message, 12 photos, and (for the first time in English) selections from his writings. 68 pages, paper

8 By Teresia Renata Posselt, O.C.D. Edited by Susanne M. Batzdorff, Josephine Koeppel and John Sullivan EDITH STEIN Edith Stein: The Life of a Philosopher and Carmelite
ics 0935216367 / 9780935216363 Edith Stein: The Life of a Philosopher and Carmel
Teresa Renata Posselt, O.C.D. was the Novice Director, then Mother Prioress of the Cologne Carmel when Edith Stein lived there. This is Posselt’s tribute to Saint Edith Stein, a wreath of recollections, lovingly woven together. It is also the first-ever biography published about that “Great Woman of the Twentieth Century.” Having been out of print for half a century, the original text is here re-edited and enhanced by scholarly perspectives and updated and corrected in the light of knowledge which was not available to the author at the time. Enriched by a broader range of contemporary literature about the philosopher, educator, spiritual writer, and victim of the catastrophe that engulfed her as part of her Jewish people, this new presentation of the biography everyone cites so frequently brings the reader closer to the real Edith Stein. The editors have avoided weighing down this engaging life story with intrusive scholarly notes and commentaries. Instead they have relegated such material to a separate section of “Gleanings.” This gives the reader the option of enjoying the biography unencumbered by supplementary matter or delving into the Gleanings when desired. The three editors/translators are close to the Stein family as well as to her Carmelite family which she entered in 1933. Susanne Batzdorff is Edith Stein’s niece, who has known her in person. Josephine Koeppel and John Sullivan are both Carmelites who have occupied themselves with the life and work of the saint and have talked with several Carmelite religious who lived with Edith Stein. Complementing their notes and comments that deepen the knowledge of the famous phenomenologist and Carmelite is an insightful “Foreword” contributed by Sr. Amata Neyer, O.C.D., who knew Posselt personally. She has served as prioress of the Cologne Carmel and as archivist for its Edith Stein Archive. 400 pages, paper

9 By: Rev. Max Walz, C.PP.S Glories of the Precious Blood

Glories of the Precious Blood. Veneration of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a devotion as old as our Holy Faith. In "Glories of the Precious Blood," Fr. Max Walz powerfully revisits the seven times that Christ shed His Precious Blood, poignantly reminding us just how much Jesus and His Father love us. These pages readily inspire a devotion to the Precious Blood, and Fr. Walz lays out a number of ways readers can nurture this devotion: through praying the Rosary and chaplets dedicated to the Precious Blood, meditating on the Passion of Our Crucified Savior, and prayerfully dedicating each day of the week to one of the seven different times Christ shed His Blood. "Those who are oppressed by the memory of their sins, diffident about the efficacy of their prayers or doubtful about their salvation, should experience an awakening of confidence through devotion to the Precious Blood." - Fr Max Walz

10 C. Alan Ames Our Father Speaks

Messages from God the Father to C. Alan Ames. Foreword In writing this Foreword, what can I say that has not already been testified to by theologians, priests, and lay people throughout the world? All are of the common mind that in the presentation of his message, both spoken and written, Alan Ames is theologically and scripturally sound. Our Lord says: "By their fruits shall you know them." (Matthew 7:20).By his personal behaviour; by the evidence of his inner calm and peace, and the constant refrain of God's love; by his obedience to the Pope, his Archbishop, and Spiritual Director, and by his firm orthodoxy, Alan bears witness to the fruits of a spirituality firmly rooted in God the Father, in whose honor this book is written. I recommend the book to the reader with confidence. Rev. Fr. Gerard Dickinson August 13, 1999. 245 pages

16 Compiled and illustrated by Sister Joseph Marie, C.H.T. (Carmelite Hermit of the Trinity). OTHER CARMELITE SAINTS AND THEMES The Way of the Cross with the Carmelite Saints
ics The Way of the Cross with the Carmelite Saints
THE CARMELITE SAINTS in their prayers and reflections reveal a deep communion with the Passion of Jesus. In the light of Christ crucified they beheld the depths of the heart of God and discovered there as well the meaning of the human heart. We cannot reach the thicket of God's riches for which we were created, Saint John of the Cross says, without peering into the thicket of his sufferings. One of the most fruitful practices of Christian piety is known as The Way of the Cross (or Stations of the Cross), a devotion that in all probability dates back to the era of the first Christians. As practiced today, the devotion centers on fourteen chosen representations of the sufferings of Christ on his way to Calvary. Each station or stop is a place for contemplation, a moment to gaze on the sorrowful Christ who remains close to us in the mystery of human suffering. One day while making the Way of the Cross, St. Thérèse of Lisieux was seized with a forceful love of God and totally plunged in fire and sweetness. Theologians see this grace as of special importance for the transmission of her Little Way. Now we have the opportunity to make the Way of the Cross with five inspiring Carmelite saints. Following along with them Christ in his sufferings, we see that the Passion of Christ cannot be exhausted, and these saints have always more to tell us. This is not a book to be read but once and then discarded, it is a book for a lifetime. "The Savior today looks at us, solemnly probing us, and asks each one of us: Will you remain faithful to the Crucified?" (Saint Edith Stein) 98 pages, paper

19 Dennis J. Murphy, M.S.C The Church and the Bible: Official Documents of the Catholic Church

The Church and the Bible is a resource book that all branches of theology will find useful: not only Biblical scholars, but those interested in the dogmatic, moral, liturgical, pastoral and spiritual teachings of the Church. Typical examples are the Pontifical Biblical Commission's studies on Christology, the Church, interpretation of the Bible, and the Jewish people and their Sacred Scriptures in the Christian Bible, all made available here in one volume in English. These and other documents, are indispensable resources for students of current theology, as well as for those interested in history. A long introduction gives the historical context of the documents as well as the norms to be used in interpreting them. Care is also taken to explain their various levels of authority in order to avoid the danger that the same value be given to all of them indiscriminately. 1048 pp

20 Edited by Christopher C. Wilson, PhD OTHER CARMELITE SAINTS AND THEMES Carmelite Studies IX The Heirs of St. Teresa of Ávila: Defenders and Disseminators of the Founding Mother's Legacy
ics Carmelite Studies IX The Heirs of St. Teresa of Á
This issue of Carmelite Studies presents new insights into the lives and writings of individuals who knew Teresa of Ávila in life and who, after her death in 1582, worked to propagate and defend her legacy, including the illustrious nuns Ana de San Bartolomé, Ana de Jesús, María de San José, and Ana de San Agustín, and her close male confidant and collaborator, Jerónimo Gracián de la Madre de Dios. A further focus of the essays is the reception of the Teresian heritage by individuals outside the order, as mediated by these early Discalced Carmelites and by Teresa's published writings. The essays were originally presented at the 2004 symposium "The Heirs of St. Teresa" at Georgetown University. That year marked the 400th anniversary of a pivotal moment in Discalced Carmelite history: the arrival in France of a group of six nuns, some of Teresa's most favored protégées, including Ana de Jesús and Ana de San Bartolomé, who traveled from Spain to inaugurate the order's first French convent. Motivated by devotion to their Founding Mother, amidst success and setbacks, these and other of Teresa's heirs strove to carry out her will with a resolute determination and to extend her reputation for sanctity throughout the world. ICS Publications is pleased to issue this volume in its series Carmelite Studies conjointly with the Institutum Carmelitanum of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance in Rome.140 pages, paper
